The Mathematician's Garden

The Mathematician's Garden (TMG) is an art piece being built for Burning Man 2011: an interactive community garden of metal and glass and light.

The unveiling was an amazing evening. The Garden was a huge success, as was the live auction. We can’t wait to do this again on the playa. :-)

What a night. We had a huge crew turnout and decided to wire up the Garden and light up what we have (which is missing about four wired flowers).

It was a beautiful thing; every hand was busy working on some aspect of the Garden: Dillon was filming footage for a Kickstarter video, Dian was making bench cushions, Isaac was finishing a couple of wired flowers, Deidre was working on her Secondary flower, Michelle and Beth and Alessandra and Joe and Shannon and… anyway, it was amazing.

At around midnight, we flipped the switch. The Garden came alive, slowly pulsing and shifting through colors. We turned off the lights and took the first real break in twelve hours. When this is done, it’s going to be incredible.

Even if you don’t have time to come make a flower, you can still help us.

We’ve been working every night this week on wiring up the platforms and the glowing flowers. As you can see from the pictures, the Garden is coming alive. We have a lot to do between now and our unveiling in a week, but the crew is pulling together and throwing down some serious commitment. Everyone is excited to see the Garden alight, the fire tree aflame, and the piece funded.

Ah, yes, that last bit: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/508659558/the-mathematicians-garden-an-interactive-sculpture

We need your help. Please donate. Pass it along to your friends and family. We have only ten days left to reach our goal or the project will fall devastatingly short of its funding needs. Help us get to the playa!

Light! A flower with light! Our Composite Numbers Secondary Flower is finished and we tested the wiring from the edge of the platform; it lights up beautifully. This is an important step. I’ve completed the wiring for several other plants, so the next pictures you see will involve other lit-up beauties.

Our Kickstarter is nearing the halfway mark, and we really need your support to get this project funded so mint.com stops alerting me to the dire straights of my finances: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/508659558/the-mathematicians-garden-an-interactive-sculpture

It’s ten days until our preliminary unveiling and fundraiser at NIMBY. There will be many sleepless nights between now and then. Stick with us!

It was a busy weekend for the Garden. On Saturday, we had about eight people come out to do some metal-working. The beginning of a giant butterfly flower now towers above the Garden, dwarfing even the fire tree. We also have new flowers like the Bird of Paradise Lost and a lot of progress on the Threes primary plant. It was a blast. On Sunday, a smaller group made tremendous progress on the tree and built a few bolt flowers. It’s really coming together.

Build season is clearly upon us. We had roughly ten people in and out of the Garden today, making flowers, soldering electronics, making and attaching tree bark, and running around making sure everyone has what they need to be happy and productive (guess who that was). We laid out the Garden to get a visual sense of where we stand. Wow…

We spent the weekend working on the Garden and made excellent progress. Several new faces showed up to make flowers (thank you so much!) and Isaac caught on fire. The flowers are turning out beautifully and Isaac is unharmed, which is how I wanted both events to turn out. Come and make a flower; the time is now.

We spent the weekend at NIMBY, making a concerted push to work on the crucial infrastructure of the Garden. It’s amazing how slowly metalworking progresses.

We spent a fun Memorial Day at NIMBY, building flowers, cutting up bark, and making platform anchors. We mounted a few of the flowers (still being constructed) onto their connectors. Exciting!

With assistance from Om Skillet, it was a productive Saturday. Someone made a sign for our workspace that says, “Danger Tree People”. :-)
